Established in 1943 as
Wakeman General Hospital, it was deactivated at the close of WW2.
During the Korean Conflict, it was re-opened. When re-opened, it
was no longer called Wakeman, but was known as U. S. Army Hospital
Number 8.
Wakeman has been called
"the Largest Hospital in the World", "the
Largest Hospital in the Nation", and "the Largest
Hospital of its Kind in the Nation". Take your
pick. But it was large!! 57 buildings, most all
2-story. Each interconnected by more than 3 miles of covered
walkways. And the covered walkways, were also 2-story, with an
equipment tunnel beneath !! |
